Student Community Standards

CLI is built on respect, trust, diversity, kindness, mutual support, and meaningful lifelong connections between the world and China.CLI

In Short, CLI Expects Students To简而言之,CLI期望学生

  • Treat teachers, staff, classmates, hosts, and community members with respect
  • Maintain clear professional boundaries
  • Follow local laws and CLI policies遵守当地法律和CLI政策
  • Communicate responsibly about attendance, travel, and concerns
  • Help preserve a safe, welcoming, and constructive learning environment

At CLI, language learning happens through close interaction: one-on-one lessons, regular contact with teachers and staff, shared activities, and daily life in Guilin. That closeness is part of what makes the experience meaningful. It helps students build lasting connections with China, the Chinese language, and the people around them.

CLI is also a close-knit international community. Students and team members come from different countries, backgrounds, and perspectives, and each person helps shape the character of the community. For that reason, mutual respect, professionalism, and clear boundaries matter here.

These standards explain what CLI expects of students as members of the community. They are intended to help protect a safe, welcoming, and effective environment for students, teachers, staff, hosts, and guests.

These standards apply to conduct in classes, CLI-arranged housing, activities, online communication, and other CLI-related settings. Conduct outside formal CLI settings may also matter if it affects safety, professional boundaries, or the learning environment.

01Our Community

CLI is built on respect, curiosity, professionalism, and consideration for others.

We value diversity of thought, background, and experience. Students should feel able to be themselves at CLI while also recognizing that they share responsibility for the comfort, dignity, and wellbeing of others. A strong community depends on kindness, good judgment, and mutual respect.

Because CLI emphasizes one-on-one and small-group immersion, trust and clear boundaries are especially important. Students are expected to contribute to an environment in which everyone can learn, teach, and participate comfortably.

02Respect, Inclusion, and Personal Conduct

Students must treat others with respect in their words, behavior, and choices.

CLI does not permit harassment, discrimination, bullying, intimidation, threats, retaliation, or degrading conduct. This includes conduct directed toward teachers, staff, classmates, language partners, hosts, drivers, guides, and community members.

Cultural differences may shape context, but they do not excuse conduct that crosses a boundary, creates discomfort, or makes another person feel unsafe.

A single serious incident may violate these standards. Repeated lower-level conduct may also become a serious issue when viewed together.

03Professional Boundaries with Teachers and Staff

CLI teachers and staff are here in professional roles: as instructors, academic supporters, and program staff. Students must respect those roles and maintain clear professional boundaries at all times.

Our teachers are here to support your language learning and your experience at CLI. They are not here as potential romantic interests, private guides, or personal companions. If a teacher or staff member sets a boundary, that boundary must be respected immediately.

In class

One-on-one lessons and other instructional settings should remain focused on learning, coursework, homework, progress, and appropriate conversation.

Students may not introduce sexual, romantic, bodily-private, or otherwise boundary-crossing topics in class or other one-on-one instructional settings, whether in person or online. Dirty jokes, sexual innuendo, suggestive remarks, and insulting, demeaning, or offensive comments are not appropriate in instructional settings.

Physical boundaries

Students must respect personal space at all times.

Unnecessary physical contact with teachers or staff is not permitted. This includes touching, hugging, blocking movement, cornering, or deliberately invading another person's space in ways that are not appropriate in a professional educational setting.

If a teacher or staff member indicates that something is unwelcome, students must stop immediately.

Messaging and social media

Communication with teachers should be limited to scheduling, academic questions, and CLI-related logistics.

Students should not pressure teachers or staff to reply outside working hours, connect on personal social media, share private contact details, or engage beyond their professional role. Teachers and staff are not required to accept friend requests, respond to personal messages, or continue communication they believe is inappropriate or outside professional boundaries.

Romantic, sexually suggestive, threatening, or otherwise boundary-crossing messages to CLI staff through WeChat, email, or any other platform are not permitted.

Outside class

CLI activities and community events are the appropriate setting for most student-teacher social interaction.

One-on-one socializing with teachers outside scheduled class time is generally not appropriate unless it is clearly part of a CLI-approved activity or program arrangement. Students should not pressure teachers or staff to meet privately, go out alone, or spend time together outside their professional role.

Teachers and staff may decline invitations without explanation and without consequence.

Romantic and sexual boundaries

Romantic or sexual relationships between CLI students and CLI staff are prohibited during a student's enrollment period.

Students may not pursue, pressure, or repeatedly invite teachers or staff into romantic or sexual interaction. This includes repeated requests for dates, gifts intended to create personal pressure, favors intended to initiate a personal relationship, or continued pursuit after a declined or unanswered invitation.

If you are unsure whether an interaction has crossed a boundary, raise the concern early rather than wait for the situation to escalate.

Intent does not determine impact. Unwelcome conduct may violate these standards even if the student did not intend harm.

04Privacy, Photography, and Recording

Students must respect the privacy of others in classrooms, housing, activities, and online spaces.

Do not photograph, record, post, or share others in ways that invade privacy, create discomfort, or cross professional boundaries. Do not share screenshots, private messages, images, or personal information inappropriately.

Always ask permission before recording in one-on-one or non-public settings. Students must also respect private residences, personal space, and non-public staff or student areas.

Following, surveilling, repeatedly seeking out, photographing, or recording a CLI staff member in a way that invades privacy or causes discomfort is not permitted.

05Class Participation and Communication

Students are expected to attend classes on time and participate in good faith.

If you will miss class, notify your teacher or CLI as soon as possible. If you plan to leave Guilin during your program, communicate that in advance when required.

Repeated unexplained absences, prolonged absence, or unannounced travel may affect your continued participation in the program. Disruptive behavior may also affect continued participation.

CLI may treat unexplained absence as a safety concern, especially if a student leaves Guilin or misses multiple consecutive classes without communication.

06Housing and Daily Living

Housing is part of the CLI learning environment. Whether you stay in CLI housing, with a host family, or in another CLI-arranged setting, you are expected to help maintain a clean, respectful, and cooperative living environment.

Students should follow housing rules, respect quiet hours, use shared spaces responsibly, and follow any CLI rules regarding guests, access, and common areas.

Smoking and drinking are not allowed on CLI property except during explicitly communicated CLI-organized special events. Pets are not allowed on CLI property.

Please lock your room, safeguard your valuables, and report room or building issues promptly to the CLI Center Property Manager.

For more detail, please read Housing & Daily Living Expectations.

07Local Laws, Drugs, and Safety

Students must obey the laws and regulations of the People's Republic of China and respect local customs and social expectations.

Illegal drugs are strictly prohibited. Any use, possession, or purchase of illegal drugs may result in immediate dismissal from CLI without refund and may also lead to legal consequences.

Students are expected to act responsibly in ways that protect their own safety and the safety of others. Serious violations of law, safety expectations, or community standards may result in dismissal from CLI.

08Possible Responses to Misconduct

CLI may respond to conduct concerns in different ways depending on the circumstances.

Responses may include a conversation, reminder, written warning, program adjustment, housing change, contact restriction, reassignment, suspension from certain settings, or dismissal.

CLI may take immediate protective steps when safety, staff wellbeing, or the learning environment requires it. Where appropriate, CLI will review the available facts, speak with the people involved, and give the student an opportunity to respond before making a final decision.

Serious violations may result in immediate dismissal from CLI programs without refund. CLI reserves the right to make final decisions in light of safety, program integrity, and the wellbeing of the broader community.

09Need Help or Want to Raise a Concern?

If something makes you uncomfortable, if a class interaction feels inappropriate, if you are unsure about a boundary, or if you need support, please contact CLI.

Students do not need to wait until a situation feels "serious" to ask for help. If an interaction with a teacher or staff member feels boundary-crossing, please raise it promptly, even if you are not sure whether it "counts." We would much rather help early than have a problem grow through silence or uncertainty.

Students may also raise concerns with a teacher or another CLI leader they trust.

CLI takes concerns seriously. When needed, CLI may take immediate protective steps while it reviews the situation. Where appropriate, CLI will gather the available facts, speak with the people involved, and give the student an opportunity to respond before making a final decision.

Retaliation for raising a concern, setting a boundary, or participating in a review is itself a violation of these standards. CLI will handle concerns with care and share information only with those who need it in order to respond appropriately. Absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed, but unnecessary disclosure is not permitted.
