This page explains what cookies are, which ones studycli.org uses, and how to change your choices.
Cookies are small text files that a website saves in your browser. A website can also save small pieces of information in your browser's local storage or session storage, which work in much the same way. This page covers both, and the tables below say which is which.
This website is run by the Chinese Language Institute (CLI). We use three groups of cookies. One group is always on: payments, security, remembering your cookie choices, and a few small jobs the site does for itself, such as keeping you on one version of a page we are testing. The "Always on" table below lists each one. The other two are optional: Google Analytics, which counts visits, and videos, maps and posts from other companies, such as YouTube, Google Maps and Instagram. Those companies set their own cookies when their content loads, and some use them for advertising. We show no ads of our own on this site.
If you visit from the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we ask first, and the two optional groups stay off until you allow them. Anywhere else we do not ask, and they are on unless you turn them off. Either way, you can change your choice at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.
We keep your choice for one year. After that we start over: we ask again in the places named above, and elsewhere the optional groups are on again unless you turn them off.
Our Privacy Policy explains what we do with personal information and what rights you have. The company behind this site is The Chinese Language Institute, LLC, in the United States. Questions about cookies or your data: info@studycli.org.
Payments, security and remembering your choices, plus a few things the site does for itself: keeping you on one version of a page we are testing, noting how you reached us on this visit, and remembering which pop-ups you have seen. None of them shows you ads or follows you to other sites.

cli_xb, cli_x_hi (session storage) | studycli.org | 3 months | A random ID that keeps you on the same version of a page while we compare two versions, and lets us count which version led to more inquiries. We do not share it. |
cli_src (session storage) | studycli.org | Until you close the tab | How you reached the site on this visit (for example, a search or a link). It is saved with a form if you send us one. |
cli_popups_…, oxy-modal-…-last-shown-time (local and session storage) | studycli.org | Until you clear it | Remembers which pop-ups you have already seen or closed, so they are not shown again too often. |

cliHeroHintsShown (session storage) | studycli.org | Until you close the tab | Remembers that the hints on a program page's video have played, so they play once. |

Optional. In the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland these are off until you allow them. They come from other companies, which set their own cookies when the content loads. Some of them use those cookies for advertising.

If you turn a group off, we remove our own cookies for it and reload the page. Cookies that YouTube, Instagram, Google or TED have already set stay in your browser until they expire or you clear them in your browser settings.
Some parts of our pages load from other companies' servers and set no cookies: typefaces from Google Fonts, author photos from Gravatar, and code libraries from jsDelivr and cdnjs. Like any web server, they see your IP address.
