In Chinese, some tones change when combined in certain sequences. The main beginner patterns to know are third-tone combinations (for example, 你好 is written nǐ hǎo but pronounced ní hǎo) along with changes involving 不 (bù → bú before a 4th tone) and 一 (yī shifting to yí or yì depending on what follows). For a complete explanation, see CLI's guide to Mandarin tone changes.
HSK 3.0 is the updated Chinese proficiency standard introduced in 2021 by the Chinese Ministry of Education. It expanded the framework from 6 levels to 9 bands (1–9), reorganized vocabulary lists, and introduced syllable, character, and word counts at each level. For a clearer breakdown of how the system changed, see CLI's guide to the new HSK.
Pinyin in this tool is color-coded by tone: 1st tone (red), 2nd tone (orange), 3rd tone (green), 4th tone (blue), and neutral tone (gray). This helps you visualize the tonal shape of each sentence as you read.
