Why students choose CLI

Every class is one-on-one. Twenty hours a week with three teachers of their own, at their level and pace. Most schools in China teach in groups; at CLI, one-on-one is the whole program. Please describe it as one-on-one, not a group class: it’s the most common mistake in listings.

They can start any Monday. Stays run from two weeks to a year (one week by arrangement), so nobody waits for a term to begin.

One price covers the essentials: housing (a private room at the CLI Center, a homestay, or an apartment for six months or more), airport pickup, orientation and a tour of Guilin, some weekly activities, visa documents and 24/7 support. Airfare, visa fees, insurance and textbooks are extra. Current prices are on our Dates and Fees page.

Since 2009 we’ve taught students from more than 50 countries, and our reviews on Go Overseas average 4.95 out of 5.

What you earn

You earn 20% of a student’s tuition up to our 12-week price, and 10% of the rest, with no cap. The 12-week price is $8,375 for a room at the CLI Center or an apartment, and $9,985 for a homestay. Tuition includes housing, so your commission does too.

From your sixth student starting in a calendar year, that first part earns 25% instead of 20%. Your first five students that year stay at 20%.

Commission on our published prices, rounded down to the dollar. “With bonus” is what the same student earns you from your sixth student starting in a calendar year. Other lengths (6 weeks, 3 months, 9 months and so on) are on our Dates and Fees page, and the same formula applies.

What it’s calculated on. The tuition the student pays, after any scholarship or discount. It leaves out meal plans, textbooks, visa document shipping, airfare, insurance and anything charged by someone else.

Other programs. These rates cover the Immersion Program. For China Study Abroad or a custom group program, ask us before you promote it and we’ll agree terms.

How it works

  1. Talk to Tania. By email or a short call, about your students and where they come from. If we’re not a good match, we’ll say so. Then you sign a short referral agreement.
  2. Refer a student. Email Tania before they apply, or ask them to choose “Other” under “How did you hear about CLI?” on the application and type your name or your organization’s name. We confirm your referral within two working days.
  3. We take it from there. Admissions, visa documents, housing and airport pickup, with an update to you at each step.
  4. You’re paid every month. In the first ten days of each month we send a statement for students who started the month before. You invoice us, and we pay within 30 days by bank transfer or Wise. If you’d rather collect the tuition yourself, you can: see “How payment works” below.

Your student’s path to Guilin

  1. 1–3 days after they applyAn admissions decision. In busy weeks the CLI Center can be full; if so, we offer another start date or other housing (which can cost more) before the student pays the deposit, or we may decline.
  2. Within 3 weeks of acceptanceA $300 deposit holds their place (sooner if they start within about six weeks).
  3. After the depositWe send the documents for an X2 student visa, which we recommend for every program; the student applies 45 to 90 days before the start. For stays of 30 days or less, we check the right entry route for the student’s nationality and dates.
  4. 3 weeks before the startThe rest of the tuition is due, with arrival details and health forms.
  5. ArrivalWe pick them up at the airport or train station. Orientation and classes start on Monday.

Two things are most often late: the visa application and, for homestay students, the doctor’s note. A short message from you two months before they leave, and again three weeks before, makes a real difference.

What you get from us

We’re a small school, so you deal with people who know every student by name.

  • One contact who answers. Tania handles everything about the partnership, and Mira, our Admissions Manager, handles your students’ applications and visa documents.
  • A partner kit. Current prices, a one-page program sheet, photos from Guilin for your listings, and answers to the questions students ask.
  • A feel for the classes. You, and anyone on your team, can take a free one-on-one trial lesson with a CLI teacher online, and Tania will give your team a short introduction to the program.
  • Updates on every student, from application to arrival, and a clear monthly statement: student, dates, housing, tuition received and your commission.

The details

What a referral agreement covers, written out so it’s clear from the start.

How a referral is credited to you

Credit lasts twelve months from the date we confirm your referral. It covers any program the student books with us in that time, and any extension of it. After that, a student who comes back is booking with us directly.

Two partners, one student: the first referral we confirm counts. We don’t split commission unless everyone agrees in writing first.

No commission is due if the student contacted us directly in the twelve months before your referral or studied with us before it (we’ll tell you within two working days), on your own team members or family as students, on a referral sent after the student has already applied, or on bookings that came from paid ads on our name.

When commission is due, and if plans change

Commission is due once your student has started classes in Guilin and paid their tuition in full, not when they’re accepted or pay the deposit. For example, a student who starts on Monday, April 5, 2027, is on your statement by May 10, and we pay within 30 days of your invoice. Before the first payment we need the signed agreement and a tax form: a W-9 for US partners, a W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E for everyone else.

What happens to your commission when a student’s plans change
They extendWe recalculate on the new total and pay the difference next month. Eight weeks in a room that becomes six months takes you from $1,118 to $2,451.
They shorten before arrivingWe recalculate on the new tuition.
They leave early with a refundCommission on the refunded part is taken off your next statement.
They postponeStill credited to you, even if the new start is more than twelve months after your referral, and paid when they start.
They cancel or their visa is refusedNo commission is due, and nothing was paid, so there’s nothing to pay back.

The 20%, 10% and 25% rates won’t change before January 1, 2028. After that, we’ll tell you in writing at least 90 days before any change, and a change never applies to students you’ve already referred.

How payment works: two options

The student pays us (most partners). The student pays their deposit and tuition to CLI, and we pay your commission every month, as above.

You collect the tuition (useful for booking platforms and travel companies). You take the student’s payment and pay us our published tuition minus your commission, by the same deadlines the student would have: the $300 deposit within three weeks of acceptance, and the rest three weeks before the start. Please agree this with Tania before your first booking, so it’s in your referral agreement.

Either way, our published refund terms apply to the student, and your commission follows the tuition we keep once they start.

Who to send us

Space is limited. We accept a referred student only when we have room for their dates, and in our busiest weeks the CLI Center fills up. Please check dates with Tania before you confirm them to a student. If a week is full, we’ll offer another start date or other housing; if neither works, we may decline the booking.

A good fit: adults who want to speak Chinese, not just pass an exam; complete beginners (nobody waits for a class to form); gap-year students, people taking a career break and remote workers; heritage learners coming back to Mandarin; anyone whose progress has stopped with apps or group classes; professionals with a goal such as business Chinese, HSK or classical texts.

Ask us first about students under 18, families traveling together or groups of five or more, serious allergies, complex medical needs or limited mobility (the CLI Center has five floors and no elevator), and anyone who needs credit at their home university.

Not a fit: anyone whose real goal is a work visa or immigration, students expecting a degree (we don’t award them), Cantonese or any language other than Mandarin, anyone looking for paid work in China, and students booked without their own knowledge.

What we ask of partners
  • Describe the program accurately: one-on-one, our published tuition, and what it does and doesn’t include.
  • Charge students our published prices. If you collect the tuition yourself, agree it with us first (see “How payment works”). If you charge for your own advice or services, tell us first and show it to the student separately from CLI tuition.
  • Don’t promise things that only we or others can decide: a visa, a scholarship, an exam result, a particular teacher or room, or credit at a home university.
  • Present yourself as a referral partner, not a CLI office or team member, and don’t register names, domains or handles containing CLI or Chinese Language Institute.
  • Don’t bid on “CLI” or “Chinese Language Institute” in paid search. General terms like “learn Chinese in China” are fine.
  • Share only what a referral needs: name, contact details, dates, level and goals. Medical and dietary information goes straight from the student to us.
What happens if my student gets a CLI scholarship?

Commission is worked out on the tuition the student actually pays. For example, a $500 scholarship on a four-week stay in a room lowers your commission by $100. Scholarships are limited and awarded on merit and need, so please don’t promise one.

Can we run a webinar together?

Yes. We can bring a teacher or a former student. Suggest a date at least four weeks ahead so the Guilin team can plan around classes.

Is this page the agreement?

No. It summarizes our standard terms so you can decide whether to work with us. The signed referral agreement is what binds, and it governs if anything here differs.
