The Chinese Calendar is lunisolar, and each of its years is linked to one of 12 Chinese zodiac animals, which repeat every 12 years. These animals always appear in the same order.
The Chinese calendar is lunisolar: its months follow the moon, so the date of Chinese New Year (and the switch from one zodiac animal to the next) moves from year to year on the Western calendar. If you're planning ahead, the Chinese holidays calendar for 2030 lists the festival dates. China's official public-holiday schedule for a year is announced only late in the year before (the 2026 schedule came out on November 4, 2025).
According to ancient Chinese tradition, every person is represented by the zodiac animal of their birth year. Individuals born in 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018, 2030 belong to the Year of the Dog (狗年 gǒunián). If you were born in January or early February, check that year's Chinese New Year date, because anyone born before it takes the previous year's animal.

Because the Chinese calendar is lunisolar, Chinese New Year (and each new zodiac year) falls on a different Gregorian date each year, always between January 21 and February 20. For a deeper look at how this works, see our guide to the traditional Chinese calendar.
We won't go into the details of this part of zodiac philosophy here, but keep in mind that each lunar year pairs one of 10 heavenly stems (干 gān) with one of 12 earthly branches (支 zhī). The pairs run in a cycle of 60 stem-branch combinations.
Each combination is symbolized by one of the five elements (fire, water, wood, metal and earth). Stems, branches and elements are also the basis of traditional Chinese fortune-telling from a person's birth date and hour, a different system from Chinese numerology, which deals with lucky and unlucky numbers.
According to this system, 2030 is the Year of the Metal Dog. If you want to read more about the doctrines of Chinese astrology, there are plenty of resources online.
The Dog sign makes more sense once you know how people in China think about dogs in general. Animals carry meaning outside the zodiac too: they turn up in feng shui and in everyday customs, where people use them to talk about personality and luck.
There are several myths used to explain the origins of the dog zodiac sign and how the dog came to represent the 11th year of this auspicious cycle. According to one well-known story, the Jade Emperor (the ruler of heaven in Chinese folk religion and Daoism) sought 12 animals to defend his palace.

Learning one sign well, like the Dog, is a good way into the rest of the 12-animal cycle. If you were born in a Dog year, you now know what your sign is said to say about you. If you weren't, the zodiac will still come up every Chinese New Year, so it's worth knowing.
